Breaking Down RTP, Volatility and Bonus Rounds
Key concepts that define the mathematical model behind virtually any game mechanic with an element of chance.
What is RTP
RTP (Return to Player) is the percentage of total wagers theoretically returned as winnings over a very long run (millions of rounds). It's a statistical figure, not a guarantee for any single session.
Volatility (variance)
Describes the character of the winnings distribution:
- Low — frequent but small wins
- Medium — a balanced distribution
- High — rare but potentially large wins
Bonus round mechanics
Bonus rounds (including so-called free spins) are separate game states with modified rules: extra multipliers, special symbols, or other modifiers relative to the base round.
How to read technical documentation
A game's official description (paytable) usually specifies:
- The exact RTP value for that game version
- The volatility level (as text or a numeric scale)
- Conditions for triggering bonus states
- Whether it's certified by an independent lab
