A common myth among gamers: the higher a game's volatility, the more "worth it" it is, because prizes are bigger. In reality, high volatility isn't about better odds — it's about a different shape of the outcome distribution. Here's why these are fundamentally different things.
Volatility and probability aren't the same thing
Volatility (variance) describes how outcomes are distributed by frequency and size — not how likely a win is in principle. Overall win probability is primarily determined by RTP (Return to Player) — the theoretical percentage of stakes returned over the long run. Volatility and RTP are two separate, independent parameters.

With high volatility, most outcomes are small, but one stands out sharply — the total over the run isn't necessarily higher than with low volatility.
What "high volatility" actually means
With high volatility, winning outcomes appear less often, but the potential size of individual outcomes is larger. This means:
- Longer stretches with no visible change in balance
- Sharper swings when an outcome does occur
- A wider spread of possible results over a short run
In other words, high volatility increases the range of possible outcomes, not the probability of hitting a winning one.
Why it's not a "guarantee" of anything
The key mistake in interpreting volatility is confusing a statistical property with a forecast.
